The first edition of Irish author Selina Bunbury's (1802-1882) martial novel centred on an Army veteran recollecting his experiences during the Peninsular campaign following the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars after 'he who had been the world's wonder and the nation's dread, was left to vent the impetuous breathings of his ambitious soul, a lonely exile on St. Helen's barren rock'. A second edition appeared in 1839.
